Frequently Asked Questions
Product Selection & Sizing
How do I know which compression garment is right for me?
The right compression garment depends on your specific condition, the area requiring treatment, and your prescribed compression level. We recommend consulting with your healthcare provider or lymphoedema therapist who can assess your needs and provide a prescription. Our buying guide and measuring guide can help you understand the options available.
How do I measure for compression garments?
Accurate measurements are essential for proper fit and effectiveness. Please refer to our detailed measuring guide for step-by-step instructions. We recommend measuring in the morning when swelling is typically at its lowest, and having someone assist you for the most accurate results. Keep in mind that the garments sold on this site are standard size, which isn't going to suit everyone. Whilst we offer a variety of features to customise our garments, it's not the same as being measured for a custom garment, which is designed to support non-standard limb shapes.
What compression class do I need?
Compression classes range from Class 1 (mild) to Class 3+ (extra firm). Your healthcare provider will prescribe the appropriate compression level based on your condition. Never self-prescribe compression levels, as incorrect compression can be ineffective or potentially harmful.
Can I wear compression garments if I haven't been diagnosed with lymphoedema?
Compression garments should be used under professional guidance. If you're experiencing swelling, heaviness, or other symptoms, please consult a healthcare provider for proper assessment before purchasing compression wear.
If there's a size difference between my limbs, is it fine to purchase a pair?
It depends on whether both limbs fit into all the measurement categories which comprise a standard size. This is important because effective compression is always well-fitting. Our range of standard-size mediven round knit socks for example come in pairs and are designed to fit a left and a right foot. You can check your measurements using the Measure & Size Guide link in the right-hand column of each mediven product listing of this website. Measure the fuller limb first, as that will set your size requirement for the pair. Then if the second limb measurements fall into all the same size categories as the first, then you have a match. If no match, then it's not advisable to purchase a pair. Instead, you should seek to be measured by a professional for a custom garment.
If I have advanced oedema with deep skin folds and non-standard limb shape, can I still buy compression socks, stockings and pantyhose online?
Day-time garment: Generally speaking, a non-standard limb shape would require a custom-measured flat-knit garment of a strong fabric, such as mediven 550. Unfortunately we don't supply custom-measured garments. We do supply a range of standard mediven 550 knee-high flat knits which come in larger sizes. Be aware that these come in pairs, and are specific to a left and right leg and foot. You can check to see if you fall within the size categories by taking your measurements using the Measure & Size Guide link in the right-hand column of each mediven product listing on this website. If you aim to wear both left and right standard size socks or stockings, then ensure that both limbs fall within the same measurement categories for your standard size.
Tip: Always measure the fuller limb first, as this will set your size requirement for the pair.
Night-time garment: Our range of Comfiwave garments for sleep and rest are revolutionary in how they conform to limb shape. This makes them better suited to non-standard shaped limbs, due to the conforming textile technology, and the way it sits on the surface of the skin. As with all the garments sold on this site, Comfiwave is limited to standard sizes. So even though there is less risk of constriction with this type of garment, one should always consult with a trained clinician if there is any doubt about fit. Comfiwave do not come in pairs, which makes ordering easier when one limb is significantly larger than the other. These garments are also made to fit both left and right, making it possible to switch from one limb to the other.

Product Care & Usage
How do I put on compression garments?
Compression garments can be challenging to don, especially at higher compression levels. We offer a range of donning aids including gloves, frames, and application sprays to make the process easier. Always ensure your skin is clean and dry and consider using a donning aid for best results.
How do I care for my compression garments?
Hand wash daily in lukewarm water with mild detergent, rinse thoroughly, and air dry away from direct heat or sunlight. Do not tumble dry, iron, or dry clean. Proper care extends the life of your garments and maintains their compression effectiveness.
How long do compression garments last?
With proper care, compression garments typically maintain their effectiveness for 3-6 months with daily wear. We recommend having at least two garments so you can wash one while wearing the other. Replace garments when they become stretched, lose elasticity, or show signs of wear.
When should I wear my compression garments?
Follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding wear schedule. Generally, compression garments are worn during waking hours and removed at night, but your specific treatment plan may differ.
Medical & Clinical Questions
What is lymphoedema?
Lymphoedema is a chronic condition characterized by swelling due to lymphatic system dysfunction. It can be primary (congenital) or secondary (resulting from surgery, radiation, infection, or trauma). Proper management includes compression therapy, manual lymphatic drainage, exercise, and skin care.
Can compression garments cure lymphoedema?
Compression garments are a key component of lymphoedema management but do not cure the condition. They help control swelling, improve lymphatic flow, and prevent progression when used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan prescribed by your healthcare team.
Are there any contraindications for compression therapy?
Compression therapy may not be suitable for people with certain conditions including severe arterial disease, uncontrolled heart failure, or acute infections. Always consult your doctor before starting compression therapy.
