Saving money and measuring for your own standard-sized compression garments can be easy once you know how. Follow this step-by-step guide and mark your measurements on the worksheet to get a fit like you've been measured by a pro!

Have a tape measure and pen handy.

**Follow instructions carefully to get your Size (IV– XII) and Length (Regular or Petite).

 Step 1.

Using a tape measure and your printed worksheet, take your circumference measurements and circle in the CIRCUMFERENCE table of the MEASURING CHART as you go. Here are details on circumference measurements:

  • cA = circumference around base of toes
  • cY = circumference around heel and over ankle crease, foot flexed up
  • cB = circumference, narrowest part of ankle
  • cB1 = circumference, start of calf bulge, lower
  • cC = circumference, widest part of calf
  • cD = circumference, just below knee over fibula head

*Tips: Put slight tension on the tape to get your circumference measurements. In other words, rather than just letting the tape sit on the surface of the skin – tighten it gently. This is a very slight pull of the tape and your circumference will reduce according to how soft the tissue is in that area. For example, you will typically get less ‘give’ at the ankle than at the calf due to the ankle area being firmer. DO NOT TIGHTEN AT ALL for “cY” circumference measurement.

* If ordering a silicone top band, do not tighten the measuring tape at the top edge “cD”.
* Your circumference measurements should appear in one size column only (eg IV(4) for off-the-shelf sizes. You will need to be measured for a custom garment if you circle in different size columns.

Step 2.

Take length measurement from floor to top edge of stocking (lD), along inside of leg, staying close to the skin. (See diagram for step 2 in the worksheet.) Circle your length in the table.

  • AD length = Regular or Petite

IMPORTANT TIPS ON MEASURING FOR KNEE-HIGH STOCKINGS:

The best time to measure circumferences for compression knee-high stockings and socks is when your limbs are at their smallest or 'emptiest', usually first thing in the morning, before gravity has had a chance to work against you.

Lower leg circumferences for compression stockings and socks are best taken before you get out of bed.

Base of the toes circumference should be taken when standing and bearing weight on the foot.

Leg length measurements are taken whilst standing, going up the inside of the leg.

Remember that a good fit is pivotal to effective and comfortable compression, so double-check your measurements and ensure that you have followed the tips provided in this guide.
