Circumference measurements - Steps 1 & 2 in Worksheet
Using a tape measure, take your CIRCUMFERENCE measurements, circling in the CIRCUMFERENCE table of the worksheet as you go.
Circumferences for Arm Sleeve to Wrist (C-G):
- cC = Circumference Wrist
- cC1 = Circumference 5cm above cC
- cD = Circumference widest part of forearm
- cE = Circumference Elbow
- cF = Circumference mid upper arm
- cG = Circumference Upper Arm
Circumferences for Arm & Hand Sleeve (A-G):
- cA = Circumference around hand at base of fingers
- cC = Circumference Wrist
- cC1 = Circumference 5cm above cC
- cD = Circumference widest part of forearm
- cE = Circumference Elbow
- cF = Circumference mid upper arm
- cG = Circumference Upper Arm
Circumferences for Glove without Fingers (A-C1):
- cA = Circumference around hand at base of fingers
- cB = Circumference around hand at base of thumb
- cC = Circumference Wrist
- cC1 = Circumference 5cm above cC
Circumferences for Glove with Fingers (A-C1):
- cA = Circumference around hand at base of fingers
- cB = Circumference around hand at base of thumb
- cC = Circumference Wrist
- cC1 = Circumference 5cm above cC
- cX = Circumference around base of each finger at webbing
- cZ = Circumference around nail bed of each finger
Here's how to measure various circumferences.
cA: Circumference around base of fingers
Measure without tension. Place the palm firmly on a hard flat surface with the fingers slightly splayed. Pass your measuring tape around the joints at the base of the fingers. Circle your size range in the cA row of the worksheet size chart.
cB: Circumference around hand at base of thumb
Measure without tension. Place the palm firmly on a hard flat surface with the fingers slightly splayed. Pass your measuring tape around the hand at the level of the thumb webbing. Circle your size range in the cB row of the worksheet size chart.
cC: Circumference Wrist
Rest your forearm on a table with palm facing up. Measure over the styloid bone without tension on the tape. Where there is swelling, never measure in a skin fold. Rather, take the tape to the side of the skin fold for a wider circumference to ensure there is no constriction at the wrist, which can cause hand swelling. Circle your size range in the cC row of the worksheet size chart.
cC1: Circumference 5cm above cC
Measure without tension on the tape. In other words, don’t pull the tape tight at all. Circle your size range in the cC1 row of the worksheet size chart.
cD: Circumference widest part of forearm
Measure without tension on the tape, as with all circumference measurements here. Circle your size range in the cD row of the worksheet size chart.
cE: Circumference Elbow
Measure without tension around the elbow tip at the point of the elbow crease. If there is swelling here, measure around the swollen area just above the elbow. Circle your size range in the cE row of the worksheet size chart.
cF: Circumference mid upper arm
Measure without tension around the belly of the biceps muscle, or the largest part of the middle of the upper arm. Circle your size range in the cF row of the worksheet size chart.
cG: Circumference Upper Arm, just below armpit
Measure without tension. Do not constrict by pulling the tape tight. Circle your size range in the cG row of the worksheet size chart.
cX: Circumference at base of fingers and thumb
Lay you hand flat on a table, palm down and fingers slightly spread. Measure at the base of each finger and thumb where the webbing is. Do not put tension on the tape. Circle each measurement in the table of the worksheet size chart as you go.
cZ: Circumference at base of each nail bed
Lay you hand flat on a table, palm down and fingers slightly spread. Measure near the base of each nail bed. Do not put tension on the tape. Circle each measurement in the table of the worksheet size chart as you go.
*Measuring Tips:
- Measure circumferences without tension, or without pulling tightly on the measuring tape.
- Hand and finger circumferences are to be taken in a relaxed position with palm facing down on a table, fingers slightly splayed.
- Wrist, forearm and elbow circumferences are to be taken with palm facing up and resting on a table, elbow slightly bent.
- Upper arm circumferences are measured in a standing position with the loose arm beside the body.
*IT'S IMPORTANT NOT TO PULL TIGHTLY ON THE TAPE FOR CIRCUMFERENCE MEASUREMENTS. THEY ARE 'SKIN' MEASUREMENTS ONLY.
Sleeve length measurements - Step 3
lC-G: Length of sleeve
The ‘G’ point is usually just below the armpit (on the inside of the arm) and indicates the top of the sleeve. The arm should be straight or with a slight bend at the elbow for this measurement. Measure length from C (wrist) to G (top of sleeve) along the inside of the arm, staying close to the skin. Check the total length on the loosely hanging arm by taking the tape down the front aspect of the arm from just below the armpit to the wrist. Circle your size range in the ‘Length C-G’ section of the worksheet. (Regular: 41-47cm / Petite: 36-40cm)
The best time to measure for compression sleeves
The best time to measure circumferences for compression sleeves is when your limbs are at their smallest or 'emptiest', usually first thing in the morning, before gravity has had a chance to work against you.
Remember that a good fit is pivotal to effective and comfortable compression, so double-check your measurements and ensure that you have followed the tips provided in this guide.
