 Step 1. Circumference Measurements

Using a tape measure and your printed worksheet, take your circumference measurements and circle in the CIRCUMFERENCE table of the MEASURING CHART as you go.

Circumferences for Knee High stockings:

    • cA = circumference around base of toes whilst standing
    • cY = circumference around heel and over ankle crease, foot flexed up
    • cB = circumference, narrowest part of ankle
    • cB1 = circumference, start of calf bulge, lower leg
    • cC = circumference, widest part of calf
    • cD = circumference, just below kneecap over fibula head

Circumferences for Thigh High stockings:

  • cA = circumference around base of toes, whilst standing
  • cY = circumference around heel & ankle crease, foot flexed up
  • cB = circumference, narrowest part of ankle
  • cB1 = circumference, start of calf bulge, lower leg
  • cC = circumference, widest part of calf
  • cD = circumference, just below knee over fibula head
  • cE = circumference just above kneecap and knee crease
  • cF = circumference mid-thigh, whilst standing
  • cG = widest part of thigh approximately two finger-widths below crotch

*Tips for taking circumferences:

Except for cA, lower leg circumference measurements are best taken when seated on a flat surface with legs stretched out in front of you.
cA circumference should be taken when standing and bearing weight on the foot.
Put slight tension on the tape to get your circumference measurements. In other words, rather than just letting the tape sit on the surface of the skin – tighten it gently. This is a very slight pull of the tape and your circumference will reduce according to how soft the tissue is in that area. For example, you will typically get less ‘give’ at the ankle than at the calf due to the ankle area being firmer.
DO NOT TIGHTEN AT ALL for cY circumference measurement and ensure that your foot is flexed upwards when measuring.
If ordering a silicone top band for a knee high, do not tighten the measuring tape at the top edge cD to avoid constriciton. Otherwise, you can tighten gently as needed.
cE circumference should be taken one finger-width above the back knee crease and two finger-widths above the kneecap. Don't measure in skin folds. Rather, take the tape to the side of a skin fold for a wider circumference. This avoids constriction. Bend your knee 30-45 degrees.
cF circumference should be taken whilst standing. This point is halfway between cE and cG. You may tighten as is comfortable at cF.
cG circumference is taken at the widest part of the thigh approximately two finger-widths below the crotch. You may tighten as is comfortable at cG. Do not tighten your measuring tape if you are ordering a silicone top band, to avoid constriction.

Step 2. Length Measurements

*Stay close to the skin with your measuring tape and measure up the inside of the leg.

Length for knee highs, lD is taken from sole of foot to D, at the head of the fibula bone, two finger-widths below the kneecap.

Length for thigh highs, lG it taken from the sole of the foot to G, at the widest thigh, approximately two finger-widths below the crotch.

IMPORTANT WHEN MEASURING FOR COMPRESSION KNEE-HIGH & THIGH-HIGH STOCKINGS:

The best time to measure circumferences for compression stockings and socks is when your limbs are at their smallest or 'emptiest', usually first thing in the morning, before gravity has had a chance to work against you. Even before you get out of bed.

Lower leg circumferences for compression stockings and socks are best taken whilst sitting on a flat surface with your leg stretched out in front of you.

Upper leg circumferences should be measured whilst standing.

Leg length measurements for flat knits are taken whilst standing, going up the inside of the leg with the measuring tape close to the skin.

Remember that a good fit is pivotal to effective and comfortable compression, so double-check your measurements and ensure that you have followed the tips provided in this guide.
